The top 100 Android non-Google Apps

Would you like to see the top 100 Apps out of a sample of 1,700 devices from all over the world?

As part of our work at Staytuned, we’ve been trying to understand how people use their phones and how we can help them to have a better mobile experience and user their phones more efficiently.

Part of this learning has been looking at which are the most installed Apps by the users. Obviously Google Apps are at the top of the list (given that we are talking about Android devices which already come with most of the Google Apps) but it was interesting to see who are the other top Apps installed by users and see which categories are the most popular.

Here is a list of the top 100 non-Google Android Apps that we saw from our data:

Everybody has an idea for a great App; sadly most of them won’t be successful.

According to Gartner, less than 0.01 percent of consumer mobile Apps will be considered a financial success by their developers through 2018 (see article here)

The fact that almost every person has an idea for “a great App” (for us who work in tech, its quite common to hear this every time we go out for lunch or drinks) and the fact that now its easier and cheaper to create an App (even if you can’t code, you can manage to get a cheap App developed by a freelancer or a dev shop) has flooded the App Stores with a huge amount of Apps, which means that the fight for users is getting every time harder. According to AppBrain, there are around 35k new Apps submitted to the Play Store every month (see their stats here).

It hard for Apps to get discovered, user can be bought but costs are getting higher or are many times not sustainable, and getting users is just the beginning of the battle for the success of an App.

At Staytuned, we are building an automated virtual assistant for Apps, which we call an App Concierge. The idea is quite simple, we want to make smartphones truly dynamic to adapt to people’s life in real time to give the users the most relevant Apps based on their context (whether they are at home, at the office, driving, at the gym, at a supermarket, traveling, or at any other location). We believe that we can help people to use their smartphones more efficiently by removing the hassle of searching for Apps on their phone, using installed Apps more often, and at the same time help App developers to get the users attention by being displayed when the user is likely to use them.

At the moment, Staytuned is also an App, (available only for Android) so we are also in the battle to get users, but I won’t go into details about how we are planning to acquire our users here.

A key piece of our company is the data to understand how people use their smartphones and how we can help them to use them more efficiently. We released a beta version a few months ago (you can download it now from the Play Store here) and we’ve been learning about the behavior from more than 3,000 users.

The average user had 158 Apps installed on his Android device

Even though users had an average of 158 Apps installed on their devices, in many cases, up to 85% of this Apps where system Apps (I’ll go into detail in a future post)

The most impressive number that we’ve seen so far was a list of 28,125 unique Apps generated by 1,700 users.

Numbers speak themselves about how hard is the battle for users, with more than half of the Apps of the sample having only 1 user.

  • 1% of the Apps of the sample where installed in only 1 out of the 1,700 devices
  • 3% of the Apps of the sample where installed in only 10 or less out of the 1,700 devices

Google and Facebook own us

  • The three most popular non-Google Apps were part of Facebook. Facebook (84.8%), WhatsApp (76.14%) and Messenger (74.25%). And Instagram (51.9%) was the fifth most poplar App
  • The most popular Apps were Google Apps such as Gmail, YouTube, Maps, Drive etc., all being installed on close to 100% of the users. A bit obvious since Staytuned is Android only, although they are not always installed in devices with older Android versions)

First of all, thank you very much for your amazing feedback….

Last week was one of the most exciting weeks in Staytuned history so far. Android Community has featured our app in a basic post just saying that Staytuned landed on Google Play.

First we thought “Very cool, but probably not a big deal” but then out of a sudden we saw this post picking up and people downloaded the app more than a 1000 times on that day.

This was very exciting, the first “real” proof that people want this! Just think about how many people are a thousand – well, a thousand is definitely enough for a big party 😉

But the fact is, that like everybody always says, there are many highs and lows when running your own company.

Android development is very demanding because there are so many different models and devices out there. Every single one them with a different screen size, different resolution, different services, different functionalities or all together.

So what happened is that the first review came in – 1 star –

“So broken – This is so broken it not only doesn’t work properly but it causes my stock lock settings to not work if I turn Staytuned off. Uninstall”

This came like a shock because it runs pretty good on all of our devices. But very soon we realized that this is exactly the kind of feedback that we need at the current stage of our company. We want to deliver the best experience and we can only make the app better when we know what does not work properly. Still, It doesn’t feel good to know that we’ve lost an excited user and that we will probably have a hard time to get him back (if we ever get him back).

Then, the second review came in…

And like the saying goes, if you keep giving your best, you’ll get your reward after a few bumps in the road. 5 stars!!!

“Nice and not complicated – Happy to see that you chose tech over animations. Tired of too many apps that focuses only on the animation”

Nothing more to say!

We started answering to all these people, thanking them for taking the time and providing us with valuable feedback. We are constantly inviting our users to join our Super Users Community, where we discuss bugs and future development features. All of our users can become part of the making of Staytuned. Actually, a lot of the users who reported bugs in the first time and gave us bad reviews are now amongst the most active super users –

Another review said:

“like the concept – even if It force-closes quite often and obviously a lot of features are still work-in-progress. I would like to see the polished version of this lockscreen app :)” (4 stars) .

And now we are hooked – we want more of this feedback! We reached out to every single person who downloaded our app (we are sorry if you found our emails annoying) to get more feedback on what they like and what is not working (yet!). Again, the response rate was amazing and this just encourages us to keep working until we deliver the best smartphone experience to all of you.

We could’ve share this since long time ago (not that it’s a secret), but this day the words came to life:

Startups are always a kind of roller coaster, sometimes it goes up and sometimes it goes down, but it is always lots of fun. And even more fun with great company on the way!!!

Staytuned graduates from Plug and Play Accelerator

Season 1 of our own Silicon Valley series is over – Staytuned for more…

Last week was a bit more hectic than usual. We participated at the Demo Day from the Fall 2014 Expo from Plug and Play and it was our graduation from a 10-week acceleration program called Startupcamp (which is part of Plug and Play). In case you haven’t seen it, have a look at our pitch.

 

Time flies by…

It fells like time flies by, while at the same time, it feels like ages. Last week was the ninth month after I left my job at the German Accelerator to start working full time on Staytuned and it has been quite an exciting ride.

In the last nine months, we pitched our idea all over the world (literally, I was in India, Germany, Mexico and the US). And by the way, the idea has evolved quite a lot, but everybody knows that’s fairly common with startups. Even while the idea has evolved, our motivation remains the same: we want to make people’s usage of mobile phones more intuitive and efficient. We believe that our mobile phones are one of the most powerful tools in our life and it should be easy for people to make the most out of them.

The past months have been a continuous learning process, involving all kind of things such as finding a cofounder, pitching your idea, incorporating feedback, learning from mistakes and sometimes learning to be confident about your idea even while some people might not see its potential.

Demo Day was a great opportunity to show people what we’ve been working on over the last few months and we are quite happy with the outcome. Staytuned received a lot of interest from attendees of the event, including potential investors and partners. Like the name says it, Demo Day was just one day and now the next season of our story begins (even though there was never really a break). We keep working day and night to make Staytuned every time better and keep up the progress of our company.

Our official time at the accelerator might be over, but this is just the ending of the season and the beginning of the next one. The knowledge and connections that we acquired in the last months will always be part of Staytuned.

It feels great to look back and see what we’ve achieved, but the best feeling is that there is no day that we don’t wake up excited about what’s to come. We’ve managed to build a team of 5 and got 3 great advisors onboard. We also received our first external investment (besides our savings), which was part of the Startupcamp acceleration program. Now we are on a closed beta and getting ready to launch our product soon!

The DEV perspective of an early stage startup

Being the product developers for Staytuned is no easy labor, we had to adapt really fast to changes and hear questions like “How hard is it for you to write an Operating System?” But it is an experience every developer in the world NEEDS to have.

While it is a hard experience in which you will face a lot of challenges, it is also an opportunity to create your own product and most likely make some awesome friends.

So, after this killer introduction let’s cut to the chase and list the challenges and how to deal with them.

STOP WHINING

Take this advice for life in general; but for startup world, whining and complaining people are the most annoying thing to have in your team. Thankfully at Staytuned we didn’t have to deal with this, but we saw some of this drama at Plug And Play Tech Center. Its okay to fight and having issues, but learn to understand when you are wrong, and think about the product, not about your broken ego (boo-hoo).

LISTEN TO IDEAS

As cliché as it might sound this is the truest statement I learned. The guys would just sit for hours and hours spitting ideas and ideas, hoping for us to make them work on matters of seconds. Obviously we somewhat hated it, but we do know it would’ve been impossible to get such an awesome product working without these guys! But it is not all about listening, if you just sit there and listen to what people want you to do, YOU ARE NOT DOING IT CORRECTLY and should go get a corporate job! You have to pitch your ideas to the other team members and fight for it, that is what will give you an amazing product.

SLEEP DEPRAVATION

Surely, everybody knows developers don’t get their 8 hours sleep like normal people, but if you plan to join a startup you must be ready for 3 hour or less sleep sessions before returning to the code. Not even Tank (Go watch your Matrix movie) has seen as much code as we have seen in late hours. You will get to hate your partners when they wake you up to continue working, but it is all worth it. Why? Don’t ask you will get to this parte pretty soon. Just try to stay away from caffeine, taurine, sugar and all of those keep-me-up products, only use them if you really, and I mean REALLY need them. Take sleep turns, read about Napoleons sleep habits and plan ahead.

LOVE/HATE YOUR CODE

You will be writing lines and lines of code, and you will be proud and you will destroy it faster than you debug it! You have to learn how to forget man! Let the code go for some better code will take its place. Sounds like relationship advice but it is. When I firs came to Staytuned I found a marvelous semi functional product which made me so happy and which took us about one week to completely destroy and create another different product. We created all kinds of cool features, which; guess it, we destroyed. But with each round of ideas, we would get closer and closer to what we wanted, the best version of our app by building some of the features into it and leaving some out. Be ready to pivot!

FEEDBACK, OH DEAR

Last but not least, think about what a customer’s feedback is and make it 10x worse. The guys from who you get feedback are not only testing your app, they are also helping improve it; so they don’t have as much time as we would like to write a proper feedback slate. Expect comments like “Please make this faster”, “App crashes, fix it”, “DELETE ALL BUGS”, “I don’t get why Facebook does this so easily” and so on… Bear a little patience to your favorite guys, the UI and the Business guys. They only want the best for the product and most of the time they just don’t know how to talk to us.

At the end of the day, you will feel a great satisfaction knowing that you are doing things differently; that you are not “Jack’s complete lack of surprise” (now this is Fight Club) and you are doing things in a different way. Make friends, not connections. Have fun and enjoy doing what you like the most. If you don’t like developing software, quick learning and unplanned product development please stay away from this awesome experience.

The team of StayTuned is excited to announce its acceptance into Plug and Play Summer 2014 Startup Camp. The three founders, Alejandro Garcia del Bosque, Bernhard Janke and Sachin Unni are very confident that the 10-week acceleration program in the heart of Silicon Valley will help them to reach their aspiring goals.

The revolution of mobile news is just beginning

Mobile is taking over in many fields, one of them being the news industry. Recent studies show a significant increase in consumption of news using smartphones and tablets. This has been forcing news publishers to take mobile as a serious part of their business.

A comprehensive study conducted by the PEJ and The Economist in 2012 revealed a good amount of data about the trends in news consumption behaviors. Get the full report for free here.

Some of the interesting insights outcomes of the survey where:

  • 64% of tablet owners and 62% of smartphone owners say they use the devices for news at least weekly
  • Getting news is one of the most popular activities of smartphone users
  • There has been movement over the last year toward using the browser rather than apps for tablet news consumption
  • People notice ads on mobile devices and maybe even more likely to click on them than they are to click on other digital ads.

The study also provides an insight about the different behaviors of users in different mobile channels (tablet vs smartphone). Although the user might be quite similar in some areas, there is a clear higher engagement of the user on mobile.

We believe that this trend will remain strong in the future, that’s why we are working to make it easier for users to consume the most relevant content for them in the most efficient way.

 

How are news consumed in the US?

It is not a secret that mobile has become one of the most important channels for news consumption. This trend has been correlated to the penetration of smartphones and mobile data services. To better understand the role of mobile in news consumption, have a look at this infographic provided by Uberflip. Although this reflects consumption of news in the US, it is still quite a good indicator of the trend.

How often do you check your phone?

Smartphones have become a part of our daily lives. They’re always with us and always connected. It is amazing how dependent we are on our devices and it is even more amazing all that we can do with them.

Here is quite an interesting graph published by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, where it shows how people interact with their phones during the day

If we have a look at the numbers, messaging and calling are still the most used functions of phones. What is also interesting, is that messaging and calling amount approximately one third of the times we check at our phones during the day. This means that two thirds of the times that we check our phones, we are doing something besides calling or messaging. This makes it clear that the usage of mobiles has become something more than just a mean for communication. This isn’t something new, but it is still quite interesting to have a look at the numbers and see how the use of smartphones have allowed the mobile industry to grow into all kind of segments.

Assuming that this numbers are accurate, this means that people check their phones 150x per day on average, which means that the phone is unlocked 150x per day. This is one of the reasons for the popularity of lock screen applications. From the app developer perspective, this is great opportunity to interact with the user and from the user perspective. The question that still remains is how can the user also benefit from this moments?
